REPORT FROM PGA EUROPRO TOUR
Sweetspot Classic winner George Woolgar takes a one-shot lead into the final day of the WPT Championship at The Oxfordshire as he hunts for his second 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour win of the season.
The Chesterfield golfer won at Longhirst Hall a fortnight ago and two rounds of 66 have put him in pole position on 12 under par at The Oxfordshire. A second win of the season would put Woolgar (Capitalservices) in a great position to claim a 2014 Challenge Tour card, the reward for finishing in the top five on the 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour Order of Merit.
William Harrold is second on -11 after shooting a superb second-round 64 (-8) while Connor Fletcher (65, 71) and Paul Grannell (68, 68) share third on eight under.
Woolgar shot his third consecutive 66 on day two of the WPT Championship, having tied first in the pre-tournament pro-am on six under.
"I've been pretty consistent," he said. "I like this course. I have played The Oxfordshire in the past at European Tour Qualifying and I always seem to play well around here. It is one of those courses that just suits and I have been reading the greens really well which helps.
"I am playing well, it is confidence; when you get on a role the game seems easier. I have won twice now on the EuroPro so I know how to deal with the final day. You can't control the other scores so you have to just keep doing what you're doing."
Woolgar's only bogey of the second round came on the fifth but he hit seven birdies on the last 13 to sign for a 66. Harrold (Sheringham Golf Club) was unblemished as eight birdies saw him to 64.
Fletcher (Chart Hills Golf Club) had lead on seven under after the first round but his second-round 71 saw him drop to third. Grannell (Vale Royal Abbey) shot his second 68 of the week to join Fletcher in third on eight under.
A cut has now been made and the 63 golfers with a 36-hole score of one over par or better will proceed to play Friday's final round.
Spectator entry to the 54-hole event is free throughout the week, and Sky Sports HD will film Friday's final round for a highlights programme to be shown four times on Wednesday, September 11.
