Jean Van De Velde established a two shot lead with a birdie at 14th. The Frenchman left an eagle putt well short, but confidently finished off from eight feet to get his nose back in front. As the Frenchman was holing out, Justin Leonard fell back to five over par at the 15th when he misjudged a chip and failed to make the resulting ten foot putt. The drama at the top continued when Van De Velde found a bunker on the wrong fairway at the 15th with a wild tee shot. However, a quite magnificent shot from the sand and a testing twenty foot putt saved par for the Gaul.
