Scotland beat Wales 5-4 but were beaten on a countback by defending champions England, who were 6-3 winners against European champions Ireland, for the President's Trophy at the end of the three-day Senior Men's Home Internationals at Royal Co Down Golf Club, Newcastle in Northern Ireland.
Scotland needed a bigger margin win over the Welsh, which seemed possible when they took the foursomes 2 1/2-1/2, but the Wales hit back to take the singles 3 1/2-2 1/2.
Meanwhile, England set up a second defeat in a row for the Irish by leading 3-0 after the foursomes. It was a disappointing show by the European champions who might have been expected to do Scotland a good turn by running the English a lot closer than they did.
